______

The security guards of a middle class building in Bogotá sit behind the reception desk every day, in twelve-hour shifts.

They, like me, spend their lives observing things as time passes. For them, it is a job; they have to do it. For me, it is an obsession, with no practical use. They are paid to write their observations in a book (the logbook); I make myself register mine using an artefact (the camera). This encounter occurred in the act of seeing how time passes.

La isla bonita (The pretty island) is a cinematic action that unfolds, live, in the space, exposing the “novelties” of a middle-class building in downtown Bogotá, from different angles, and with the presence of different operators.

In an analogous way to the notes taken by the security guards in the building’s logbook, the artist records the common spaces with his camera and borrows the unusual stories of the people who walk by, giving voice to these real stories through the fictional characters of a movie by the Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr.
